Can You Sleep With Jewelry On? |ABSOLUTE MUST -KNOWS |

Jewelry pieces such as necklaces, rings and bracelets are the most common pieces of jewelry worn. In fact, these are so common that they may appear to be a usual part of your attire and there may be times that you may forget to remove them at all!

But is it safe?

Especially, can you sleep with your jewelry on? This post will help you understand if sleeping with jewelry on is safe and look at this from various practical aspects.

Typically, there is nothing wrong with sleeping with most jewelry pieces such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets etc. on. They are all made of sturdy metals and will not be disoriented, nor will they cause you any hazards. However, there are the following considerations, which can help you decide if, or not you want to sleep with your jewelry – necklace, rings or bracelets on.

1. Constituent metals of the jewelry piece

2. Threat of Skin allergies and disease

3. Risk of Jewelry Wearing Off

Can Sleeping With Necklace On, Choke You?

Barely, will! The bulk of the necklaces and chains worn by people are quite loose and are hence very unlikely to pose a threat of choking. Even when  the necklace pendant or a loose end of the chain gets pulled under your body or pillow, it will hardly strangle you. The body will awaken at the very first sensation of discomfort and choking is really a far fetched scenario.

Is It Safe To Sleep With Your Necklaces, Chains or Rings On ?

Well statistically speaking, there aren’t many case of choking due to chains or necklaces and this is why it is comfortably safe to sleep with necklace, chains or rings on.However , there are a few health conditions which can flare up on prolonged wearing of jewelry, especially while you sleep.

1. Jewelry Dermatitis

Chromium and Nickel are among the most common sub-substances used in making jewelry items such as buckles, necklaces, earrings, rings etc. These are also the most common allergens, and catalysts of skin dermatitis and allergies. Another astonishing fact is that women are 10 times more susceptible to such conditions than men.

2. Radioactive Contamination

Gold jewelry is prone to have as a residue some very radioactive elements such as cobalt, thorium and radium, which are used as a part of mining and smelting. These substances carry the threat of radioactive exposure to the body, if the jewelry is worn at night and for prolonged periods.

3. Blood Circulation Impedance & Bacterial Build-up

Rings and other jewelry items which grip the skin tightly can disrupt the flow of blood in the fingers, if worn overnight . This may be linked to finger deformities in some very extreme cases. A microbiology study at the British Public Health Center found that ring shaped jewelry parts increased the bacterial growth on skin multi-fold, when compared to loose jewelry parts. This suggests that it may be better to remove ring shape jewelry pieces while sleeping.

4. Aging Owing to Sagging

A very important reason why removing earrings and other jewelry pieces from the ear while sleeping is to avoid ageing and sagging of the earlobes. The additional pressure on the lobes at night can cause extensive deterioration and sagging. Also, giving the pierced ears some air and application of SPF creams on them can help slow down this ageing and help you avoid expensive medical lobe lift procedures.(some of these can cost as high as $3000 per sitting).

5. Tangling With Hair

One of the most obvious side effects of sleeping with jewelry pieces such as rings, bracelets and especially chains on is their tangling with hair. My locks were frequently found to be inseparable from my favorite gold chain which I would wear to bed, almost every night, a few years ago. It would then take me quite sometime every morning to get this sorted, and was also taking a toll on the ends of my mane. This is why it isn’t advisable to

What necklace/chains should you never sleep in?

sleep with jewelry on

When you sleep with necklace or chain on, it is then that it is in maximum contact with other objects, and hence the risk of wearing off is the maximum. With that being said, you do not want to be wearing a chain or necklace  with 1) a short bending point 2) a flat design, or 3) a minimal give, while sleeping.

Below are some of the chain types you should never sleep in :

1. Bead Chains

2. Omega Chains

3. Herringbone Chains

4. Snake Chains

What necklace or chains can you wear while sleeping?

A lot of to be moms and lactating mothers have complained that they just do not get the time to be reminded of , and remove chains and necklaces before going to bed. If you travelling in the same boat, it is advisable to invest into buying jewelry which is rather safe to wear while sleeping , and is sturdy enough to not break easy.

While you are at it, always go for solid chains as opposed to hollow chains. Solid chains are by definition made to be sturdy and last, as compared to the latter, which will kinky and bend more frequently as you wear them in bed.

Here are a few types of chains which I would consider safe to wear while sleeping.

1. Cuban Curb Link Chains

2. Figaro Link Chains

3. Mariner Link Chains

4. Rope Chains

5. Box Chains

6. Anchor Chains

A word about Carats?

When it comes to the design of a chain or necklace you would want to wear while sleeping and practically anytime of the day and night, the carat rating is as important as the actual structural design of the necklace or chain. I prefer 10k to 14k chains to be the ideal to search designs in , when looking for the most durable sleeping chains and necklaces. These have a softer gold composition and are hence resilient to chipping , kinking and breaking away in bed.

Should you sleep with diamond studs and earrings on?

Well now that we have been talking about the various types and makes of jewelry and which ones of these can be worn while sleeping, how could diamond jewelry be left out?

The answer really is no, you should not wear diamond studs and earnings while you sleep in a bed , couch or sofa. This is attributable to two very important reasons :

1. The High Cost Of Diamond and the Risk of Abrasion

2. The Hard texture and the Cut of the Stone

1. The High Cost & Risk Of Abrasion

A diamond would perhaps be the most expensive piece of jewelry anyone would invest in. With such a great investment, it is pragmatic to be a bit more cautious about caring for it and hence not sleeping with the diamonds on . While the diamond itself may not be much affected by the rubbing with quilts, pillows and the bed sheet, the supporting structure in earring may gets withered over time.

2. The Hard Texture & Cut of the Stone

It is a very well known fact that a diamond is formed after years of excruciatingly high temperature and pressure transform coal , and it is hence one of the hardest material known to man. Imagine what a center engraved stone or a stone with sharp edges do to your skin, or that or your sleeping partner , if worn during sleep.

It is thus a smart move to bag your earrings or diamond studs into a safe diamond jewelry box at night, wherein they stay shiny and gleaming for a long time.

Should pearls be removed at night?

can you sleep with jewelry on

Just like the choice of wearing any other jewelry at night, it is the concerns of comfort, and the threat to the very jewelry piece which should drive your  decision with wearing pearls to be as well. While there are no known health concerns of wearing pearls to bed, it is a good idea to remove pearls at night.

Pearls are an organic substance, in essence being accretions of calcium carbonate. They are hence sensitive to a lot of chemicals and substances which we commonly use in perfumes, creams and sprays. Wearing a pearl necklace, bracelet or earring to bed poses the risk of moisturizers, night creams or perfumes attacking the calcium in pearls and hence destroying them.

It is hence advisable to remove pearls and pearl jewelry before going to bed. Rinsing them in luke warm water and keeping them safe will ensure they stay shiny, gleaming and beautiful for years to come!

I keep this amazing jewelry box in my bedside drawer. It keeps my jewelry safe when I am sleeping. The box is also really portable and I like to carry it when I travel as it can hold good number of jewelry pieces along with other essential items as well.

Should you remove gemstone rings and pendants while sleeping?

Gemstones worn in rings, bracelets and necklaces are a stark bit different from other types of jewelry in this regard. Since they are scientifically charged with energies intended for certain effects on the mind and body, they must not be removed frequently. It is hence advisable to have gemstones in comfortable rings, , bracelets and chains, which are convenient to wear at night.

There is yet another benefit of not removing gemstone rings and pendants while sleeping. Gemstones if touched by individuals other than for whom they are initially charged, can lose their energy abilities. This is why keeping them on for the maximum time in their period of maximum use , helps you get the most benefit out of these.

Should you wear magnetic jewelry while sleeping?

Magnetic jewelry is yet another form of jewelry which can be safely worn while you sleep. Rather, wearing magnetic jewelry like this one can help you induce deeper sleep spells and even help in curing sleep related disorders for a lot of people.

How do magnetic bracelets help sleep?

The magic of magnetic jewelry in helping people sleep lies in the positive feedback to production of a hormone controlling sleep patterns in humans, called Melatonin. This hormone is released when we sleep, in order to put the body and its organs in a state of ease , which helps induce sleep. Magnetic arm bands, wrist bands and bracelets are a great way to give a Melatonin boost to your body and hence are a piece of jewelry which is great to wear while sleeping.
