Although a lot of religious and scholarly texts talk about selecting gemstones for a certain objective, there is much confusion around the purification of these gemstones.
I have thereby tried to compile for you, what I have used for purification and activation of my gemstones, and what experts out there say about the same.

Why Do Gemstones Need Purification or Cleansing?
The main reason why gemstones might require purification and regular cleaning is to do with the very working of gemstones. Another important reason as to why gemstones will need purification and cleaning is the astrological aspects of the gemstones, their interaction with auspicious and inauspicious times, and any celestial or astrological events occurring.

As a general rule, it is most recommended to cleanse and recharge a gemstone right after you have acquired it, and just before wearing it. This may be because on the transit to reaching you, the gemstone may have been exposed to high radiations and vibrations (on aircrafts, trucks and trawlers etc.), or to negative energy pockets when the gemstone changed hands.
Also, it is a good practice to cleanse and purify your gemstones as per the governing planet or celestial body’s cycle, if you are constantly wearing the gemstone. The primary reason for this is that prolonged wearing can also cause negative energy buildup and radiational depletion for the gemstone.

While all gemstones are different in terms of their composition and astrological properties, there are some common themes which drive the purification and cleansing of them all. Thus, starting with some very general points around the purification, which should be followed for all types of gemstones.

Experts and authorities on gemstone wearing agree on the fact that the purification of any gemstone must only be performed, post it has been cast into the ring, pendant or any other casing in which you intend to wear it. The simple reason for this is that if you purify a gemstone before casting, the subsequent casting procedure can alter the energy balance of the gemstone, needing you to re-purify it.

The day when you ideally want to wear the gemstone should be chosen post astrological inputs, which entails judging what time of the year it currently is, and how the planetary movement of the governing planet of the gemstone are aligned at the moment. PURIFICATION OF RUBY
Ruby is one of the costliest gemstones out there, and is predominantly worn for favors from the Sun.
How Do You Purify Ruby?
The purification of a Ruby entails dipping the ring or the pendant housing the Ruby , in a specially prepared cleansing mixture. This cleansing mixture should consist of equal proportions of milk, water and organic honey. The volume of the mixture should be that it is just enough to completely dip the ring or the pendant being cleansed.
Once the mixture has been freshly prepared, burn incense sticks in the background, and recite the sun god mantra : “Om Suryay Namah”. During this time,let the ruby be dipped into the mixture , and let it be so for 30 minutes.
PURIFICATION OF AMETHYST
Amethyst is one of the most commonly used crystal, especially in opening the intutional and spiritual space for the bearer. This happens when the amethyst vibrations are perfectly aligned with those of the theta brain wave of the person wearing it, and this is the optimal state of working for this crystal or gemstone.
Does Amethyst Need To Be Cleansed ?
Amethyst is a crystal which has a high frequency vibration and a tendency to transduce negative vibrations into grounded positive ones. However, it can absorb negative energy pockets owing to prolonged negative exposures, and hence may lose its properties. This is why cleansing amethyst is a good idea, at least once a month (or on completion of a moon cycle), if you use it regularly.

While there are a wide variety of both natural and synthetic gemstones available today, it is important to understand the different between what cleansing and recharging them entails. While cleansing can apply to gemstones in general, it is only the natural gemstones that need recharging.
